What did I think of the book?

 ***Spoiler Alert(s)***

I have to rate this book 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. This book is very long and boring. I liked this story but I got bored quite frequently. This book was made up of many love letters from Anne written to Gilbert and some of the adventures she had at Summerside. The plot has similar patterns from the previous books. She befriends someone grumpy, interferes with someone’s love life, and overcomes challenging problems with grace and poise. This is the same plot from book 1. But I liked that she made friends with people that have problems and helped solve the problems. It was very funny and interesting.

What did I think of the characters of the book?

Anne is an optimistic girl who likes to imagine. Anne talks straightforwardly about wanting, seeking, and building new friendships. She is stubborn and makes mistakes but sees the world as a positive place full of possibilities. She is funny, bright, and a regular chatterbox. She has grown older and wiser but has a little childish self left in her. She becomes a principal at Summerside High School. Gilbert Blythe is Anne’s fiancee. He goes to a medical school for three years to become a doctor. He receives the letters Anne gives him. But he is only in one scene.

Elizabeth Grayson is an unhappy and lonely child who lives next door. She lives with her great-grandmother after her mother died and her father went to work overseas. She dreams of “Tomorrow” and changes her name based on her mood.  Anne tries to bring joy into her life. Katherine Brooke is the vice-principal at Summerside High School that resents Anne. She resents her because she believes that she should have gotten the job instead of Anne. She is sarcastic and bitter, but a very good teacher. She lives a joyless life because she has been raised by her uncle and she feels the need to repay him. She and Anne become good friends and lives a happy life in the end.

Rebecca Dew is Aunt Chatty and Aunt Kate’s housekeeper. Everyone believes that she “rules” the widows with her outspoken ways and demands. Her employers have learned to manage her with reverse psychology. She is genuinely fond of Anne and very kind. Aunt Charlotte “Chatty” MacLean is a sweet, sensitive old widow who lives at Windy Poplars. She is very light-hearted and good-natured.  She likes to buttermilk her face, read novels, and play cards. Aunt Kate MacComber is the owner of Windy Poplars who used to be married to a sea captain.

What did I think of the art of the book?

This cover is simple and easy to know what it what. There is a little house surrounded by grass and bare trees. Anne is walking down this small platform made of wood. She is wearing a black skirt, a brown sweater, and a white shirt. She is carrying some books with her hair in braids. There is another house farther in the background. I think there are sheep behind Anne(all I know is that there is some type of animal behind her).

Would I like a sequel or does the sequel work?

There are sequels to this book and I’m reading the next book. A sequel would work because Anne is getting married and will raise children. This would be her last time teaching before she gets married to Gilbert. There are 4 more original sequels to this book. And by original, I mean, that L.M. Montgomery wrote these books.

What is the ideal reader age group for this book?

The ideal age group for this book would be 12 and up. Anne writes love letters to Gilbert and mentions being kissed on the neck.
